This book is about one of those patriots, Brigadier General George Ashworth Cobham Jr a man of extraordinary virtue who fought and died for his adopted country. Included are 107 of his letters sent from the battlefields of the War Between the States telling of the bravery, hardships, and horror of a Civil war that pitched brother against brother. Each day as we enjoy freedom, those that served and sacrificed walk with us, because of their greatness we enjoy the benefits of this glorious Nation. My husband David J. Hurlbut is the Great, Great, grandson of George Ashworth Cobham Sr. and Catherine Curry Cobham. Our home contains many artifacts, letters, and personal items of “The General” We are reminded of him on a daily basis as we pass framed memorabilia of George Ashworth Cobham Jr. along with handmade furnishings, (Both George and his older brother Henry became accomplished carpenters) their pieces are used on a daily basis and lend themselves to all manner of design. One of my favorite pieces is the lap desk that the General owned.

Have we been Snookered

In the most recent of days, we learn that AOL and the Huffington Post have joined forces to the tune of 313 million dollars paid to the Huffington Post, and additional Millions to Arianna herself, plus Arianna Huffington is to take a leading role in the AOL hierarchy.

I question Arianna’s real role, Is it truly a metamorphism from ultra Conservative activist, to a left wing dissident mogul or is it all in the name of Entrepreneurism. One expects that many people, in their youth (not all) vacillating from one position to another, it is part and parcel of maturing, but Arianna was no spring Chicken when she changed sides. I do not believe anyone could accept her statement that the right had fooled, blinded, and bamboozled her. Her long history of involvement from her Cambridge days forward, would contradict those statements unless she could claim stupidity ….Which I seriously doubt.

In the beginning of the nineties she was part and parcel of Newt Gingrich’s Progress and Freedom Foundation, one cannot get more conservative than that. She voiced vociferous opposition to the government’s role in American lives, calling it “Big Government”, she was outspoken against immigration and called for restrictions, and not just on illegal Immigrants.

Her political activism was well-defined when she allegedly reinforced rumors about then President Clinton (the darling of the left) and a certain deceased ambassador, along with her calling for the resignation of Mr. Clinton, through her website Resignation.com. There are people out there who would say that she certainly had views that would be associated with the right wing, and yet in her book, Right Is Wrong, she refers to those with right-wing views as the lunatic fringe that Hijacked America.

There have been at least three public claims of Plagiarism; one claim settled out of court. In her earlier years, she gave political donations to Republican candidates, many of whom lost; maybe she got tired of criticism,and losing.

Whatever the reasons; Ms Huffington has managed to amass millions whilst shedding her conservative views, and opinions at the same time that she was embracing the far left.It would appear principles are not part of her adjenda.

Only in AMERICA with the Free Enterprise and a Capitalist system could this be attained, a system, I might add that Ms Huffington and her cohorts on the left disparage daily. I wonder if she realizes how truly blessed she is to live in this great Nation, a Nation that the left is intent on destroying.

You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.

Do Not Hold Your Breath

Do not hold your Breath.

After the November elections, so many breathed a sigh of relief. A word of caution, “it ain’t over till the fat lady sings”, and right now she is only humming. The Democrat Party is not about to give up its hold on the country. Nothing is sacred (for democrats no pun intended), the democrats and the vast liberal money machine, will stop at nothing. The left’s insatiable quest for power is relentless. It is breathtaking what has been accomplished in the last few months, by a shellacked Democrat party, with the help of a few misguided Republicans.

We can only hope that we can hold until the New Congress is firmly seated, and they start to develop the backbone that we gave them in the 2010 November elections. As I write we have heard that Congresswoman Giffords has been shot, and six Innocent victims killed along with as many as thirteen injured, in a senseless act of violence. May God bless them and their families?

Immediately; part of the response was that vitriolic speech was the reason, and yet I immediately Googled the name of the shooter Jared Loughner, and found bizarre ramblings that were attributed to him, quite some time later journalist pointed this fact out, I am sure they have far greater investigative tools at their finger tips, than I have, and yet many continued to assign the vitriolic speech to the Tea Party. Not once did I hear that a daily dose of hate speech from the Daily Kos, Huffington Post, or the same type of speech broadcast on MSNBC, could have contributed to his actions.

I personally do not believe in Coarseness in debate and have written about this behavior in a previous blog. I also am totally opposed to being silenced by those with a political agenda who will use and twist a story for their own deviousness. In the aftermath, of this horror do not let your opinions or thoughts be stifled, just remember to take the high road and one will prevail. Our Nation needs lawful dissent, especially when we believe that our Constitution is being abandoned; that is why so many made the ultimate sacrifice.

Vigilance

 Welcome to my Blog

 With the exception of a few undecided seats, the midterm elections are over. This is not the time to rest on our laurels; luxuriating in a job well done. This is the time to remain vigilant, (please note I did not say vigilante.) The focus has to be on those who were newly elected; and those who remained and have not been true to their constituents.

 Many of us have worked on campaigns; others have contributed hard earned money to those running for office, still others have written to elected officials, bringing pressure to bear on maintaining the Constitution. The results have been formidable, an example of the American people at their best.

 The hard work is just beginning, not only in our respective states, but across this great Land. We need to remain constantly vigilant, our thoughts and idea’s need to be made clear to those who now work for us. For starters, I would recommend the following.

 1. All bills must be read on the floors of Congress and posted on the Internet; including any changes. If the member of Congress is not present for the reading, then they do not get to vote. The bills will be brief due to the fact that members of congress do not want to sit around and listen.

 2. All members of congress that draw a salary will have the salary increase capped at the COL as with Social Security recipients. The Social security cap was activated by Congress, so there should  not be problem including Congress and all administration employees under the same guidelines.

 3. The names will be made available of all bureaucrats that write bills, along with their affiliations and how much they were paid for the project. So often these are people we would never vote for regardless of which side of the aisle we support, they are writing bills unread by our Representatives, bills that we are forced to live with.

4. Benefits, such as, lunches, health clubs, auto services and anything that is consider a freebie at the taxpayer expense; will be taxed as ordinary income to those receiving them. These Amounts may seem trivial, and only a drop in the bucket, but the drip, drip, drip, soon fills  the bucket.

 5. Taxes, Congress will be forced to complete their own taxes (a work day evening activity) no outside help. All tax submission will be audited by an independent CPA / IRS. When completed, members of Congress should be made to declare their mistakes and the percentage of tax they pay (not the amount, I could care less) Just the percentage.

 The list goes on and on, if we could get at least 5 to 10 things done each year, along with tackling the big stuff, such as the Health care fiasco, Cap and Trade debacle, Global Warming rip offs, Entitlements. We would at least feel as if we were able to make a dent in this out of control Congress who continue to  behave  like juveniles. It depends on us, call and write your Representatives and Senators, check the bills they are trying to foist off on the taxpayer, demand that they listen to your voice, research how other states are voting, continue to be pro active, and at all times remain VIGILANT.

                 Part Two.

Several weeks ago I wrote a post titled Let the Rhetoric begin… It sure has. I have not been posting for a couple of weeks due to working on political campaigns. Now we are in the final stages of one of the most influential midterm elections of my life time. The future of our Nation and the future of our children and generations to come are at stake.

This is not the time to hold back or let up on the pressure that has been brought to bear on politicians on both sides of the aisle.The fact that we want our Nation and Constitution upheld has been made abundantly clear. Those who have made it so and those who agree, must go to the polls and vote, this is the ultimate act for each of us to achieve. Taking as many like minded people along, while encouraging others to vote is a must …it is our duty to those who have fought and served to protect  this God given right.

Remember: that even those who do not have a political affiliation initial after their name, need considerable scrutiny. They may be Judges, Solicitors, all manner of people, running for Government positions, their actions affect you, and you are paying their salary. Go to your polling booth, prepared, read the amendments (often they will be unwise spending of your hard earned money.)

Do not be swayed by last minute sound bites that are lies and a distortion of facts…. We have seen much of that, as the incumbents become increasingly desperate, remember, they will revert to their old ways once re elected, and the shame will be on us.

 Important! If we do not take our Nation back now

 America as it was intended, will be gone forever.

A legacy is what we leave to each generation, a gift from those who came before. Today I ask what are we going to pass on to the future citizens of America, and how disappointed will they be that we did not adhere to the Constitution that has bound us together all these years. The Constitution is not a living breathing document as some would have us believe. Our Founders intended for it to be as, it was written.

I want you to understand, it is now your turn to ensure their efforts were not in vain.

I want you to speak about this Nation in positive terms and praise, remembering, politicians come and go, Our America is to remain a beacon of light forever.

I want you to take on the responsibility of teaching, America’s Greatness to our children. Do not leave it to others, for they will not care, as much, as you do.

I want you refresh your own memory, with the history that I created for you.

I want you to thank every Military Veteran and, Active Military person that you meet.

Quite often, I carry a dictionary with me when I travel, and it comes in use, in case of delays; also, it is a change from the normal read. It is remarkable how words have been hijacked, polluted, and used to communicate an entirely different meaning or context, than the unique use that was originally intended. When I speak to people in foreign countries, they are always amazed at the pride we have in our American Flag. We display our flag not necessarily for an occasion, or given day, but the fact that we love it, and all it stands for. Think about it?  how many other nations have flagpoles in their yards, or flags hanging from their homes, unless they are celebrating something specific. People in England are afraid to fly the flag of St George or the Union Jack because it might offend someone. The mere act of flag activity takes thought, time, and consideration. I thank God we still have the freedom to do each of these. I would venture to say that those who criticize our flag,….  or have  a poor image of America do so with an enviable mind set. » read more

There are so many obvious reasons why the BP oil leak is a disaster, but beyond the obvious tragedy of the situation  is this reality: it has presented another opportunity for the Obama administration to launch its latest assault against capitalism.

The endless deflection of accountability to the oil spill from the White House to BP could work with some voters, opening the door for the kind of takeover of the industry that has occurred in healthcare and is being cobbled together right now for the financial industry. The White House has a playbook with one play: It’s all about bringing big business to its knees. The way to do that is demonization. BP’s CEO Tony Hayward has been such an easy foil central casting couldn’t have produced a better villain. But that isn’t good enough – every single day the flames of anger and hatred must be fanned by the administration. We must hate Wall Street, the healthcare    industry and  oil  companies.

Under this cloud of hate and fear and distrust is it any wonder our economy has ground to a halt? Is it any wonder banks have been hoarding money and businesses hoarding money, and consumer spending went back into a shell in April. Of course BP is going to pay for the damage, but that isn’t going to be enough. The industry has to brace for a series of investigations and hearings and public floggings. Executives will have to travel to Washington and try to answer dumb questions obviously designed for further embarrassment rather than solutions – and everyone there will arrive thanks to crude oil. Then again, I’m sure everyone in Washington has seen businesses grow from money raised on Wall Street and have benefited from the amazing medical industry America possesses, the best in the world.

I continue marvel when the president tells people or industries to take his wrath and shut up. It’s called survival instincts. Of course Wall Street has hired lobbyists. Of course BP is going to spend money on trying to get out their message. Did they really want all of this oil to spill into the Gulf? Did Wall Street really want the economy to collapse? If anyone wants to see the economy collapse it would be a follower of an ideology that despises the foundation of this economy. Last week President Obama mentioned his ideas on what the pillars of the economy should be, and hinted that government is needed to control all four. Over the weekend he lashed out at BP paying a dividend to shareholders, a shot across the bow of investors just as little old ladies with GM bonds were painted as greedy and cold hearted. They must be salivating at the White House. What a gift, putting another industry (pillar) under their thumb.

America could only lose its position on top of the world through self destruction. I’ve talked about this for half a dozen years … fear and self-loathing. Now the idea of supplanting capitalism with a better system is underway. You can call it fettered capitalism but it’s more akin to socialism. It has never worked and never will. The very threat of this shift gave us Friday’s jobs result. Trillions of dollars tossed at the housing market from government programs, Fannie Mae (FNM: 0.9001, -0.0298, -3.2%) and Freddy Mac (FRE: 1.15, -0.04, -3.36%) bailouts and support (unlimited) and FHA backing all mortgages hasn’t stopped housing prices from continuing their descent. The steadfast and unwavering determination to fundamentally change our economy is impacting it faster than I thought it would.

Can everyone hide in their bunkers forever? Can we afford it while everyone braces for the moment it’s their turn to be crushed rhetorically and under the weight of regulations and rules designed to control and punish? Where is the tipping point, where even if we tried we couldn’t reverse the impact of this anti-business war on success? I don’t know the answer to that I do think there is time to fix this. But the message isn’t resonating. Take this moratorium on deepwater oil drilling. According to Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association the impact of halting work on 33 exploratory wells will be devastating:

    Rigs – $250,000 to $500,000 a day means loss of up to $16,500,000 per day in costs for idle rigs.
    Supply boats – $30,000 day for 33 rigs will cost about $1,000,000 a day.
    Employees – up to 140 per shift at $1,804 week could add to $330,000,000 a month lost wages.

The gears of commerce have been locked, sealed shut the way Constantinople held against siege after siege until succumbing to the Ottoman Empire in 1453.

Banks want to lend, businesses want to grow and people want prosperity – unless all that stuff is going to be taken from them, at which point they only want to survive. I still believe in the business cycle and the uniqueness of the American capitalistic system. From time to time it needs nudging but it recognizes the difference between a takeover and a helping hand – not that it’s hard to tell the origins and intents of government overtures these days.

                                           The last 45 days have given pause for thought, as to where the common- sense values lie in those who are supposedly  running our Country. In my humble opinion, the moment the oil catastrophe happened in the gulf; the powers to be should have swung into action, and called in every resource of humankind, and asked for ideas and help. There are many people in the oil industry, many in academia, and many in other walks of life, who have knowledge and expertise, and by joining forces would have been able to handle the situation in conjunction with BP. Yet we find ourselves in a situation where the Administration all but ignored the situation for the first two weeks. Of course, not included are the unmarked graves of those buried where they fell, along with many more lost at sea, and those who rest in our homeland.
